I have updated my artist profile

Every now and then I update my artist profile.  It give me a new focus on my work. Here is is.

Photography is the greatest form of self expression.  It communicates with my soul; a kind of a “catharsis scream”.  This  offers me a mental release  from my professional career.  After using my right brain all day, it is nice to use my left brain to create something meaningful.  This brings a yin and yang to my life.

When I pick up my camera after work,  I prefer to shoot inanimate objects. Using light, shadows and selective focus, I am attempting  to give the objects a life force; allowing them to tell a story.  Because of this, I sometimes tend to become lost in my perception of light and shadows.  It allows me to constantly visualize different angles and perspectives of spaces and even people around me.

When I photograph people, I am drawn to capturing them in communal areas.  I usually try and catch people off guard to create a pensive state of being which is a window into their souls.  You would be surprised how much people tend to let their guard down and become relaxed when they think no one is watching.  (Ever notice how differently children behave when they know they are being watched?)

I’ve come to this place of artistic expression after experimenting with several other approaches to photography.  I finally listened to an art director and a close friend of mine and I redirected my work to reflect my own true artistic expression.

I think that this is a true reflection on who I really am. Another thing that I like about it, while I am continuing to pursue my photography, it would not reflect badly on myself if I make any career changes. (Not that I am planning on anything)

Thanks for visiting and happy shooting

I was walking around Boston on Wednesday and grabbed some amazing candid shots of people just walking around.

It is so much fun to capture images like this!

The guest speaker at my camera club Monday night was Lance Keimig. He is a fantastic photographer that does night time photography. It made me find some old images that I took when I first started photography school.  If you want to check out his work, CLICK HERE

I love this image!  Check out how I was able to time it to get 2 colors of the stop light!

I love the streaks of head lights and tail lights.

Cannot believe that I was able to get her to pose so nicely!

More streaks of light.  I got a little crazy here, I used my flash to light up the cones.

The last image, some people say that I should have removed that "juice box"  but I think that it adds to the image.

Old picture of Carin

I found this old picture of my daughter Carin and love it.  She might kill me for posting this but I love it!  I took this image years ago with an old p&s shoot digital camera.

Remembering a great man

My father-in-law died earlier this year and I am helping my wife’s family find, scan and restore old images. Here is something that I have been working on tonight. The picture was is very bad shape as you can see. He is with his brother and some of the “trophies” from some of their hunting trips.

First pass of the scanner

second pass of the scanner

Then i had to "painstakingly" paste them together.

Then i had to remove the scratches and missing pieces and correct the exposure.

Boston on a Sunday afternoon

I was needing some ME time so I went into Boston today to take some images of Financial District.  One good thing about the recession, no security guards to worry about.  :)

been very, very busy

I have been very busy the last couple of weeks.  I went to Rochester, NY for Easter Weekend to see some family and friends.  (My lovely wife Tiffany grew up there)

I have also been cleaning and packing.  My wife and I are looking for a condo.  Yard work is a little too much for us.  (My daughter Carin and I have terrible allergies)

I have also been getting some images for print competition.  One was for GLPA and the other is for PPA.  (The PPA one is really scaring me. )  I have to choose 4 images for that one and mail them to PPA.  My PPA approved print case is in the mail and I should have it by the end of the week.  Not too worried b/c the prints are not due until the end of the month.  I will post the images shortly.

I have also entered an image for Face on PDN.  While you cannot vote any more, here is a link to the same image on my Facebook page.

Abandoned buildings

I took a personal day off  from work to take my wife to a doctor's appointment and afterwards I took some images of some abandoned little cabin's not far from my house.  I am not sure as I am posting this of the history of them but they are not going to be around us much longer.  If you want to check them out, http://tinyurl.com/yghxdnf.

Vacation week

This week I have been on vacation and enjoying everyday day of it.  I have been getting a lot of things done around the house, renewed my website, walked around Boston taking pretty pictures, and went to Constant Contact to learn about email marketing.

Here are some of the pretty pictures that I took while walking around Boston.

I wish the light was just a little better but I am pretty happy with the results.

BIG 4 0

I turned a big 4-0 today. Kind of disheartening.  I am very happy where I am in my life and I am looking forward.  I am working on lining up some gallery shows, a couple of sales and other options.  I have also sent in  some images to black and white magazine.  I am keeping my fingers crossed on that one.

I am renewing my website and plan on sending out a mass media update by the end of the week.

New website

After a lot of soul-searching and exchanges of emails of a photography friend, I have decided to rework my website and focus on my stronger images.  When I finished photography school, I had a portfolio review by Jim Fitts and he told me my strongest images are of fine art work.  I was a little resistant to make this my only focus but after looking back at what I have been doing on my free time and the work that I have produced from it, i cannot argue any longer.

I am also going to be focusing on my wide-angle portraits.  I am still amazed by the work of Platon.  My final project at school was a series of them that were just amazing.

This weekend I will be cleaning and backing up hard drives and selecting images for my new website.  I was going to wait until my ad on the knot but why bother.

I will be still willing to do weddings providing I can use my style for the bride's wedding.

I will leave you with my favorite image from my recent trip to Atlanta.

Studio Management Services (SMS) in Atlanta

I just got back from a 2 day workshop in Atlanta that PPA sponsored.  It taught me a lot.  (A mean a lot)  I learned how to better market my business and learn how to deal with customers.  I am going to have to digest everything in the next day or two and rework everything.

I was able to take a lot of nice fine art photography images while I was there.  (Images will be posted by the end of the week.)

I will also be posting some images of my wife's stay in the hospital and Halloween.

personne qui collecte les donations

I just wanted to send everyone an update.  My family and I just got back from our vacation in Boulder.  We had a lot of fun.  While we were busy visiting my wife’s new niece, we did not get much of a chance to go into the mountains.  I was able to take some amazing images in the center of town.  (Pearl Street Mall.)  I am calling the collection, “personne qui collecte les donations.”   While that is in French, when you see the images, you should be able to translate.

Just go to www.john-roy.com and the gallery is the last one.

None of these images are have been corrected in Photoshop.  They are just as I shot them.  (Just exposure correction )  I wanted everything to be the way it was when I saw it.   I included an image that I took in Boulder 2 years ago and a image in Cambridge that I took 3 years ago b/c they all go together.)
